WILL EISNER DOCUMENTARY SCREENING AND PLAY READING

2:30 p.m. staged play reading: A Contract With God

Both events are free and open to the public and will take place in the South Theatre at the Ross.

In his 60+ year career, Eisner would go on to create “The Spirit” (a series called “the ‘Citizen Kane’ of comics”), be one of the first to develop comics for instructional and educational use, as well as fostering the development of today’s graphic novel as both advocate and master, write the first textbooks on the art form and he served until his passing as its de facto elder statesman and most enthusiastic promoter.

A Contract with God and other tenement stories

Adapted for the stage by Jennifer Olson
A Contract with God was the landmark graphic novel that pioneered the genre. Based on Eisner's childhood in the Lower East Side of New York in the 1930s. Jennifer Olson, a senior at the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and film has adapted the work under contract with Will Eisner Studios, Inc. as part of her undergraduate thesis. Her new script will be premiered as a reading following the documentary screening.

Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist is the story of the life and career of a man who was a stupendous influence on comics, a 97-minute feature film documentary, which debuted at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival, produced with the full cooperation of the legendary creator and, after his death, the Eisner estate.

These events are part of Will Eisner Week, a national initiative promoting graphic novel literacy.
